Final
Friday 19th September 2014



The Menteith Ospreys "A" team of Peter Auchterlonie, George Whyte and Ronnie Gilbert followed up their win in the first of the semi-finals by recording a catch of 46 fish to convincingly win the Scottish Club Championship final. The Change FF AC "A" team of Kevin McCabe, Jock Kettles and Andy Dunn had 30 fish and finished second and the Grizzle Cats "A" team of Andy Boylan, John Morton and Billy Foster with 29 fish were third. A total of 387 trout were caught with 270 being returned. Each competitor retained their first two trout with 2lb being awarded for every fish they returned.

Peter Auchterlonie is on a hot spell at the moment and just the week before the final he was presented with the Phoenix Silver Salver as the top Scottish Rod in the silver medal team at the Autumn International at Llyn Brenig. In the final he concentrated on the Rookery and the Heronry where he caught 20 trout on a mix of nymphs and boobies on a midge tip line. All three in the team had excellent catches and George Whyte took 10 trout from the Road Shore and the Rookery on the same set up. Ronnie Gilbert also fished with nymphs and boobies on a mdige tip line and caught 16 trout at the Road Shore. Allowing for 2lbs being awarded for the returned fish their 46 trout had a weight of 94lb 10.2oz.

Change FF AC "A" team had 30 trout for 64lb 6.3oz and two of their team, Kevin McCabe and Andy Dunn were also in the Scottish silver medal team (captained by Andy Dunn) at Llyn Brenig. On this occasion Kevin McCabe had 10 trout for 20lb and took his fish on dries at the Gap. Andy Dunn had 9 trout for 20lb 2.1oz and took his fish on boobies fished on a midge tip line at Sams Point. The third member of their team, Jock Kettles, had 11 trout for 24lb 4.2oz which were taken on Jocks buzzer fished on a slow glass line in the Heronry.

The third placed team, Grizzle Cats "A" team had 29 trout for 57lb 10.4oz. Andy Boylan had 9 trout for 17lb 3.6oz which were taken on boobies and snatchers on a midge tip line on the Road Shore. Andy has been secretary of the Scottish Youths for many years and is standing down this year. Billy Foster had 13 trout for 26lb 3oz which were taken at the Rookery on boobies and snatchers fished on a midge tip line. Their third team member, John Morton, had 7 trout for 14lb 3.8oz which he took on an orange blob fished on a slow glass line at the Gap.

The Scottish Club Championship Committee and the SANACC members wish to thank sponsors Glen Garioch who provided bottles of their Glen Garioch 1797 Founder's Reserve Single Malt Whisky to be presented to the top team, top individual and the captor of the heaviest fish throughout the Saturday night heats and to each member of the winning teams in the final and most of the teams that reached the final stage.

Semi-Final No 2 - 29th August


Twenty one teams contested the second Scottish Clubs semi-final on 29th August with the top 11 progressing to the final. A total of 399 fish were caught of which 277 were returned. There were 11 trout over 4lbs plus one at 6lb 9oz and one at 7lb 1oz.


Top club were Rainbow Warriors represented by Laurie Taylor (12 fish), John Cree (12 fish) and Alex McEwan (7 fish) and their catch of 31 trout was three ahead of second placed Alba Orvis B. The captain of Rainbow Warriors received a bottle of 12 year old Glen Garioch malt whisky provided by the sponsors Glen Garioch. Laurie took his fish at Nairns Bay and the Malling Shore where he was fishing a candy booby and hoppers on a slow glass line. John was fishing a candy booby and diawl bachs on a ghost tip line at Lochend while Alex took his fish at the Malling Shore and the Heronry on diawl bachs and fabs on a floating line.

Alba Orvis "B" also received a bottle of 12 year old Glen Garioch and were represented by David Bonnington (13 fish), Paul Garner (8 fish) and Gregor Fleming (7 fish). David took most of his fish on dries at Lochend while Paul was at the Heronry and the Malling Shore with boobies on a midge tip and Gregor took his fish on a fab and diawl bachs on a midge tip at the Rookery.

Scottish Club Championship
Semi Final No 1 - 22nd August


The first of the semi-finals was won by Menteith Ospreys "A" who caught an incredible 60 fish which was six ahead of second placed Change FF AC "A" who had 54. The captains of both of these teams each received a bottle of 12 year old Glen Garioch malt whisky courtesy of sponsors Glen Garioch. The third placed team was North Berwick AC with 26 fish.

Eighteen clubs contested this semi-final and the top 9 go through to the final. A total of 457 trout were caught of which 351 were returned. 106 fish for 252lb 8oz were retained. The weather was mixed although in the main it was overcast with a fair amount of rain and a light northerly wind.

This was some performance by the Menteith Ospreys team of Peter Auchterlonie, Ronnie Gilbert and George Whyte with their captain, Peter Auchterlonie, having a superb catch of 31 trout to his own rod. Ronnie Gilbert was their next best with 16 and George Whyte took 13 fish which would be good enough to win most competitions.

Peter took his fish on the Road Shore where he was fishing a mix of buzzers and boobies on a midge tip line. George was also at the Road Shore and fished a tequila fab and buzzers on a midge tip line while Ronnie went to the Cages where he fished a cat booby and tequila blob on a midge tip line.

Top rod for second placed Change "A" was Jock Kettles with 25 fish with Kevin McCabe taking 18 and Andy Dunn taking 11.

The three anglers representing third placed North Berwick AC were Keith Logan (11), Ken Wood (10) and Derek Fuller (5).

Heat 13 - 26th July

It was the final heat on Saturday night and once again it rained for most of the evening. Ten clubs took part and sinking lines with boobies was the order of the day. All of the boats headed for Gateside Bay at the off and as to be expected that was where the top team and the top five individuals caught their fish.

Top team and winner of the sponsors bottle of 12 year old Glen Garioch Malt was the Change FF AC "B" team of Wullie Leach (3 fish), Carl Nixon (6 fish) and Jim Crawford (6 fish) which had 15 fish for 34lb 10oz. All three took their fish on boobies fished on either a 5 sweep ir Di7.

Newton Mearns FF "B" represented by Alasdair Mair (8 fish), David Mateer (7 fish) and Ewan McDougal were second with 15 fish for 32lb 8oz. Moncrieffe AC represented by Andy Kemp (4 fish), Sandy Boag (2 fish) and Grant Sutherland (5 fish) were in third with 11 fish for 24lb 7oz



The top five individuals that qualified for the Champion of Champions were:-

1st. Alasdair Mair of Newton Mearns with 8 fish for 16lb 5oz which earned him a bottle of the sponsor's 12 year old Glen Garioch malt whisky.
2nd David Mateer of Newton Mearns with 7 fish for 16lb 3oz.
3rd Ian Robertson of Tweed Valley Tanglers with 7 fish for 15lb 6oz
4th Jim Crawford of Change with 6 fish for 13lb 10oz

Wullie Leach caught the heaviest fish of 4lb 4oz which earned him a bottle of the sponsor's 12 year old Glen Garioch malt whisky.


Heat 12 - 19th July

The thirteen team set out for heat 12 in a light drizzle that gradually changed to a torrential downpour that lasted for over two hours. On the upside the forecast thunder and lightning did not put in an appearance however the trout were not impressed with the heavy rain and were very ellusive during the time it was on. As normal the top three clubs qualified for the semi-finals and the top 5 individuals go through to the Champion of Champions final. A total of 118 trout for 260lb 0.6oz were caught with 60 being returned.

Top club were Menteith Ospreys "B" with 16 trout for 34lb 7.4oz and they were presented with a bottle of 12 year old Glen Garioch malt whisky courtesy of sponsors Glen Garioch. Menteith Ospreys were represented by Steven O'Neill (7 fish for 14lb 7.6oz, Paul O'Neill (4 trout for 9lb 6.8oz) and Wullie Simpson (5 trout for 10lb 90z).

Steven, Paul and Wullie all elected to go to different areas of the Lake with Steven taking his fish at the Sillage Pit, Paul at Kates Brae and Wullie at Gateside Bay.

In second place were the team from SANACC with 13 fish for 29lb 12.6oz. They were represented by Scottish Club Secretary Kenny Miller ( 5 trout for 10lb 15.4oz) and Scottish Club Committee members Andy Anderson (3 trout for 7lb 3.6oz) and Mick Moran (5 trout for 10lb 14.4oz)

In third place with 13 fish for 28lb 0.8oz were Townhill AC represented by Colin McGlone (2 trout for 3lb 11oz), John Michie (9 trout for 18lb 14oz) and Robin Vaughan (2 trout for 5lb 7.8oz).

John Michie took his fish at the Malling Shore where he was fishing a woofter booby and cormorants on a hover line. John Buchanan was in Gateside Bay where he was fishibng two boobies on a Di3. Steven O'Neill took his fish at the Sillage Pit where he was fishing a stevie may booby on a 6ft fast midge tip and Kenny Craig took his fish on blobs and diawl bachs on a 5ft midge tip

There was a tie for the heaviest fish with clubmates Ian Runcie and Kenny Craig of Brechin AC each catching a trout of 3lb 9.8oz. Both anglers were presented with bottles of Glen Garioch 12 year old malt whisky. Both fish were caught in Gateside Bay.

Next week (26th July) will be the last of the heats before we move on to the semi-finals on 22nd and 29th August.




Heat 11 - 12th July




With constant rain and a high water temperature at the Lake of Menteith it was never going to be easy for the 15 teams that contested heat 11. Almost every boat set off for the Heronry, Malling Shore, Cages Bay and Rookery and as was to be expected these were the areas that produced the winners.

Top team and winner of the Glen Garioch bottle of 12 year old malt whisky were FAFA represented by Alan Steven (2 trout), Ian Dobbie (3 trout) and Andy McAdam (4 trout) with a total catch of 9 fish for 22lb 0.4oz. All three were fishing buzzers on a Di3 in Cages Bay.

In second place were the team from Monifieth Trout AC represented by Keith Robertson (2 trout), Malcolm Selvey (3 trout) and Willie Meldrum (2 trout) with a total catch of 7 fish for 17lb 15.4oz

In third were the team from Lochgelly SRC AS "B" represented by Archie Ferguson (2 trout), David Chalmers (5 trout) and Derek Cowan with a total catch of 7 fish for 17lb 2.4oz.

These three clubs go through to the semi finals.

The top five individuals go through to the Champion of Champions:-

1st and winner of a bottle of 12 year Glen Garioch malt whisky was Brian Mackenzie of Rowbank AC with 5 trout for 11lb 9oz. Brian took his fish at the Malling Shore where he was fishing boobies and crunchers on an SSI

2nd. Davy Chalmers of Lochgelly SRC AS with 5 trout for 10lb 13.2oz. Davy also took his fish at the Malling Shore where he was fishing Boobies and hoppers on a floating line.

3rd. Abigail Montgomery of Dows FFC with 4 fish for 10lb 5.4oz. Abigail took her fish in Cages Bay where she was fishing two boobies on a Di3

The heaviest fish was a beauty of 4lb 9oz caught by Alan Steven of FAFA on a green buzzer in Cages Bay and earned Alan a bottle of the sponsors 12 year old Glen Garioch malt whisky.



Heat 10 - 5th July

Heat 10 saw 15 teams competing with the top three clubs going through to the semi-finals and the top 5 indivikduals going through to the Champion of Champions.

Information from from the day anglers showed catches from Gateside Bay (Cages), Malling Shore, Dog Isle to Stable Point and Rookery Point to Portend Bay. After the first hour several of the boats in Gateside Bay left and headed to Malling shore for the drift in the light westerly wind to Stable Point.

Top team on the night was Hawick A.C. with 18 trout for 36lb 1oz
In 2nd place was Alba Orvis FF "A" with 15 trout for 30lb 1 oz.
In 3rd place were Ferry FF with 13 trout for 29lb 14oz.

Hard Lines to Aberdour & Dist and Crown FF whose teams had 29lb 11oz and 29lb 3oz respectively and came close to qualifying.


The top five rods on the night and going through to the Champion of Champions Final on 17th October were:-

1st place Shane Kelly Hawick A.C. with 13 trout for 26lb 4oz
2nd place Gordon Fisher Ferry FF with 6 trout for 14lb 13oz
3rd Graham Steel Middleton FF with 7 trout for 14lb 11oz
4th Calum Crosbie Alba Orvis 7 trout for 14lb 10oz
5th place Sandy Dawson Rainbow Warriors A.C. with 6 trout for 12lb 5oz.

The heaviest fish was a lovely brown trout weighing in at 5lbs caught by Middleton angler Keith Dickens.

The Captain of winners Hawick AC along with the top individual Shane Kelly angler and captor of heaviest fish Keith Dickens all received bottles of "Glen Garioch" malt whisky courtesy of sponsors Morrison Bowmore, Distillers. 146 trout weighing 307lb 2oz were caught, of which 69 were released.

Heat 9 - 28th June

Heat 9 in the Scottish Club Championship saw 12 teams competing. As normal boats headed for Gateside Bay (Cages) Malling shore, Heronry, Sams Point, and Rookery Point, with a lesser amount heading to road shore and Lochend. Conditions had cooled down from previous week and good catches had been recorded the day before in the National semi final. Dry fly, crunchers,diawl bachs on washing line tactics with booby or fab on the tail were working well .

1st: Caley Liners with 17 trout for 35lb 8oz.
2nd: Rainbow Warriors with 11 trout for 24lb 11oz.
3rd: Neilston FF with 9 trout for 20lb 14oz.

These three clubs go through to the semi final 29th August.

The individual rods on the night to go through to the Champion of Champions Final were:-

1st John Benson Caley Liners with 9 trout for 17lb 10oz.
2nd John Cree Rainbow Warriors with 7 trout for 15lb 13oz.
3rd Jim Twaddle Caurnie A.C. with 6 trout for 12lb 2 oz
4th Ronnie Robb Neilston FF with 5 trout for 10lb 8oz
5th place was a tie with Calum Brodie Dalry-Garnock and Mark Stephen Neilston FF both taking 4 trout for 10lb 6oz.

These six anglers go through to the "Champion of Champions" final on 17th October.

The heaviest fish on the night was caught by Mark Stephen Neilston FF and weighed in at 5lb 1oz.

Heat 8 - 21st June

Saturday night saw 12 teams contesting Heat 8. Due to the continual sunshine the Lake was heating up in top layer of water, and fish were reluctant to rise. Deeper water seemed to be holding the trout and Gateside Bay (Cages) proved again to be the most popular. There was a good north westerly wind and conditions cooled into the evening but few trout reacted and many dry fly anglers were disappointed.

The competition proved to be very close with the top three teams all catching 7 trout and only 6 ounce separated them. Winners were Saltire FF with 7 trout for 14lb 6oz (3 returned). In 2nd place was ABC&D "A" with 7 trout for 14lb 2oz (3 returned) and 3rd place went to Heather Fly Fishers "B" with 7 trout for 14lb (3 returned). These teams go through to the semi final on 29th August.

The top 5 rods on the night qualified for "Champion of Champions"

Heat 7 - 14th June

Heat 7 saw 13 teams competing. As the 20 boats left the shore conditions were perfect with warm light breeze. Half of the boats headed to Kates Brae, Todds Hole and Lochend with the other half went to Gateside Bay, Rookery Point and Heronry. About 7 pm the sky darkened and heavy sheeting rain appeared, lasting for almost an hour. By 9 pm conditions had settled with a change to a north easterly wind.

Top team on the night were Rothes Oak who caught 18 trout (12 returned) for a total weight of 35lb 11 oz. 2nd place went to Coldstream with 12 trout ( 6 returned) for 23lb 5oz and 3rd place went to Dunfermline Railway with 9 trout (4 returned) for 16lb 14oz. These teams go through to the semi final on 22nd August. ..................................

The top 5 rods qualifying for "Champion of Champions" final 17th October were:

The heaviest trout on the night was a rainbow of 3lb 2oz, caught by Les Hawke Bank of Scotland (West) .

The top team captain, the angler with best basket and captor of heaviest trout, all received bottles of "Glen Garioch" malt whisky, courtesy of sponsors Morrison Bowmore Distillers.

Gary was using a floating line with a three fly cast with cormorants, crunchers and fab on tail. He tried different flies in the top three feet of water with a figure of eight retrieve. Gary started on the road shore then went to Kates Brae. He also tried dry fly to tempt rising trout after rain had gone. His best flies were olive and fiery brown crunchers.


Heat 6
7th June 2014


1st place went to Leslie Llanilar with 14 fish for 27lb 7oz

2nd place went to Dalzell AC with 13 fish for 26lb 2oz

3rd were St Boswells & Newtown with 11fish for 21lb 14oz.

Dave Dunn from Leslie Llanilar was 1st with 9 trout for 19lb 4oz, Dave fished a washing line set up on a 5ft ghost tip in the waves changing to a floater when the wind softened later in the evening. His flies were a biscuit fab,olive crunchers and diawl bachs which he fished in Gateside bay at the burnmouth areas. Dave also returned a trout estimated to be between 6-7 lbs and he also lost numerous trout at the net.

In second was Hans Kane of Dalzell AC with 7 fish for 14lb 9oz.
Third was Jim Mackie of Dalzell AC with 6 fish for 11lb 9oz.
Fourth was Paul Cushnie of leslie Llanilar with 5 fish for 10lb 3oz.
Fifth was Dave Wright of St Boswells, Newtown & District with 5 fish for 9lb 15oz.

The heaviest fish of the night was beauty of 6lb 9oz caught by Alan Harvie of Munnoch AC.

The night started off with heavy rain and a moderate wind. Most boats went to the cages with about 7 or 8 heading to Lochend and the Heronry. The rain continued for most of the night but by about 9-30 it eased and as the wind dropped the fish started to move in most areas although a lot of the anglers were finding them hard to catch.

Twelve teams contested this heat with the top three clubs going through to the semi finals and the top five individuals going through to the Champion of Champions.

The captain of the top club, Leslie Llanilar, and the heaviest individual basket, Dave Dunn, along with the captor of the heaviest fish, Alan Harvie, each received a bottle of Glen Garioch Malt Whisky from sponsors Bowmore Distillers.

Heat 5 - 31st May

Fourteen teams contested heat 5 with the top three clubs going through to the semi finals.

1st. Menteith Ospreys "A" 40 fish for 80lb
2nd. Grizzlecats "A" 21 fish for 44lb 7oz
3rd. Alba Orvis FF "B" 21 fish for 41lb 4oz

Heat 4 - 24th May

Heat 4 saw the wind changing from a south easterly to an east chilly wind. The 36 anglers set off again mostly heading for Lochend , Todds Hole and Butts Bay.

Top of the 12 teams competing on the night were Ayr Travellers "B" team with 20 trout (14 returned) for a total weight of 42lb 4oz. 2nd place went to Crown Fly Fishers with 13 trout (7 returned) for total weight of 27lb 15oz. 3rd place went to North Berwick A.C. with 12 trout (6 returned) for total weight of 23lb 13oz. These three teams go through to the semi final on 22nd August.

Top 5 rods on night go forward to the individual final of "Champion of Champions" on 17th October.

The heaviest fish on night was a rainbow of 2lb 14oz caught by Newton Stewart angler Andy Johnston.

The captain of winning team, the top rod and captor of heaviest fish all received bottles of "Glen Garioch" malt whisky courtesy of sponsors Bowmore Distillers.

In all 103 trout were caught with 44 being returned. The weight of the kept trout was 126lb 8oz. The 44 returned were given 88lbs Total weight of 103 trout was 214lb 8oz Top rod Kevin Andrews started off in Todds Hole using a floating line with Diawl bachs and a white cat booby on tail. He later changed to yellow owl dries.

Heat 3 - 17th May

Heat 3 saw 13 3 man teams head out onto the lovely Lake of Menteith. Most of the boats made for Kates Brae, Tod Hole and Lochend, where fish had been caught all week.

Previous winners Inverclyde Fly Fishers took the honours with a catch of 34 trout (28 being returned) for a total weight of 69lb 12oz. 2nd place fell to Balbeggie A.C. with 23 trout (17 being returned) for 45lb 7oz. In 3rd place was Stirling Castle A.C. with 19 trout (13 returned) for 41 lb 3oz These teams go through to the semi final on 22nd August.

The individual parallel competition "Champion of Champions" has the top 5 rods progress to a final on 17th October.

1st Calum Clark Invedrclyde FF 14 trout 27lb 11oz.
2nd Keith Doig Balbeggie A.C. 13 trout 25lb 11oz
3rd Iain Campbell Inverclyde FF 11 trout 21lb 11oz

The heaviest trout on the night was caught by Glenburn A.C. angler Jim Crawford and weighed in at 6 lb 6 oz

Team captain, top rod and captor of heaviest fish all received bottles of "Glen Garioch" malt whisky, courtesy of sponsors Bowmore Distillers.

Calum who is only 16, had the bottle of whisky collected by his team captain Ken Oliver. All Inverclyde FF team fished floating lines with buzzers and a white cat booby on tail.

Heat 2 - 10th May


Ten teams contested the second heat with the top three teams going through to the semi-final on 22nd August and the top 5 individuals going through to the Champion of Champions final on 10th October. A total of 157 trout were caught with 100 being released. Conditions were overcast with a light wind. Buzzers and olives were hatching with trout feeding on them in many areas.

Top three clubs:-

1st. SPRA (West) with 25 fish for 48lb 11oz
2nd. Glencorse Reservoir FF with 23 fish for 46lb 15oz
3rd. Lothian & Borders Police AC with 20 fish for 40lb 4oz

Top five individuals:-

1. Alan Hill (SPRA West) with 20 trout for 39lb 8oz
2. Scott Miller (Stanley & District AC) with 13 trout for 26lb 7oz
3. Willie Brash (Glencorse Reservoir FF) with 12 trout for 24lb 3oz
4. Keith Anderson (Lothian & Borders Police AC) with 10 trout for 20lb 15oz
5. Stuart Barclay (Glencorse Reservoir FF) with 9 trout for 18lb 13oz

Alan caught his fish on traditional wets and snatchers using a floating line on a drift from Kates Brae to Tod Hole

Heat 1 - 3rd May


Saturday 3rd May saw the first heat of Scottish Club Championships at lovely Lake of Menteith. 11 teams of three anglers set out on a nice evening with a hint of rain to come. Buzzers seemed to be hatching and trout were surface feeding.

The competition is fished on partial release basis with the first two trout being retained then catch and release with 2lb per returned fish being awarded.

On the first heat a total of 143 trout were caught with a combined weight of 292lb 14oz. Of this 88 trout were returned.

The ever consistent Change Fly Fishers AC "A" had a convincing win with 33 trout for 66lb 13oz. Second place went to Leslie & Glenrothes "B" with 15 trout for 33lb 8.8oz. Only 1 oz behind in 3rd place were Caley Liners "B" team also with 15 trout for 33lb 7 oz . These three teams go through to the semi final on 22nd August.

In the Champion of Champions individual parallel competition, Change Fly Fishers captain Kevin McCabe, current National Champion, was top rod with 15 trout for 30lb 10oz. The other two Change FF team members Andy Dunn and Jock Kettles, both internationalists, finished 2nd and 4th with 11 trout for 22lb 2 oz and 7 trout for 14lb 1oz respectively. 3rd placed individual went to internationalist and 2013 Brown Bowl winner Ray Anderson of Leslie & Glenrothes team with 9 trout for 19lb 10oz. The 5th angler to qualify was Ian Lincoln of Kahts Whiskers A.C. with 6 trout for 13lb 1 oz.

The heaviest fish on the night was a splendid rainbow of 5lb 0.4oz caught by Caley Liners angler Stuart Raybould . The captain of winning team , top rod, and captor of heaviest fish all received bottles of "Glen Garioch" malt whisky courtesy of sponsor Bowmore Distillers.
