2013 Scottish Club Championship

Sponsored by Angling Active and Speyburn Highland Single Malt Whisky

Semi-Final Dates

The two semi-finals will be held on 23rd and 30th August 2013. The teams that qualified from heat 1 to 7 (4th May to 15th June) go to the semi-final on 23rd August and the teams that qualified from heats 8 to 13 (22nd June to 27th July) go to the semi-final on 30th August.

Heat 1 - 4th May

The Scottish Club Championship sponsored by Active Angling and Inver House Distillers got underway at the Lake of Menteith on the evening of Saturday 4th May. The nine clubs that took part arrived to find a very strong wind blowing straight onto the beach and it felt more like February than May. All competitors had the same idea and every boat motored towards the Lochend and Todds Hole area which afforded some shelter from the wind and was known to be holding fish. As so often happens in the evening the wind dropped gradually throughout the evening and some excellent bags were taken. The competition was fished on a partial catch and release basis with the first two fish being retained.

Heat 11 - 13th July

Thirteen Clubs turned out for heat 11 and with the present heatwave raising the temperature of the Lake it was guaranteed that we wouldn't see a repeat of the bumper bags returned in heat 10. With the fish searching out the cooler water almost all the boats headed for Cages Bay and The Rookery and a mix of top of the water and sinking lines were tried during the evening. There was a light breeze to begin with and a few fish were seen moving in Cages Bay but as the wind picked up the few became pretty scarce.

Bridge of Allan 76AC "A" had worked out what was required and their team of Peter Shepherd, Mike Willis and Alan McLachlan had bags of 7, 6 and 2 to give their club 15 fish for 31lb 7.8oz. In addition to earning them a place in the semi-finals their efforts earned them a bottle of Speyburn Highland Single Malt for being the top club and Peter Shepherd received a further bottle of Speyburn for being the top individual. Their total was 9 fish clear of Balbeggie AC "B" in second with 6 trout for 14lb 6.4oz. The third place in the semi-finals was taken by Crieff FF with 5 trout for 11lb 9oz. A total of 45 fish were caught.

The heaviest fish on the night was taken bu Graham Galloway of Stirling Castle AC and went to the scales at 3lb 4.4oz. That earned Graham a botlle of Famous 'Angler' whisky.

Peter and Mike took all their fish in Cages Bay on DI5s. Peter's fish fell to boobies, crunchers and snatchers and Mike's fell to boobies and blobs.

Peter and Mike go through to the Champion of Champions along with third placed Bob Veitch of Crieff FF; 4th placed Alastair McGillivray of Kilmallie AC and 5th placed Keith Doig of Balbeggie AC.
